About Jay

Jay McLaughlin was born in 1974 in Missouri to Mike and Julann McLaughlin and has been riding horses for almost as long as he has been alive. Being the son of a horse trainer he always knew what he wanted to be when he grew up – a horse trainer. Jay’s dad did not necessarily specialize in any one discipline with the horses and was an all around AQHA horse trainer, as was popular at that time. He trained and showed a 4 time AQHA World Champion halter mare, Sure A Smooth Chick. Mike could ride, show and train all types of Quarter Horses as he showed or helped clients with horses that showed in the reining, pleasure, halter, western riding, horsemanship, trail, barrels, poles, and much more.

Jay started his adventure with horses at the early age of 1 ½ when he had his first pony. His first show as at the early age of 3. From the time Jay was 9 he was very active in the Monroe County 4H program as well as showing horses at all levels. His mom, Julann, was the head of the Horsemanship program for 23 years. She ran the program from the time Jay was 9 years old until he was 32. Julann, a retired school teacher, obviously loved teaching kids and helping kids, as Jay had long graduated from the 4H program when she finally turned the reins over to the new director.

While Jay’s Mom and Dad may not be quite as active in showing horses as they once were, they are still very active in the horse world. Mike still trains horses and they stand three stallions, as well as owning McLaughlin Western Store in Paris, Missouri.

Since Jay’s mom was the head of the 4H Horsemanship program she cut a deal with Jay about showing horses. If Jay wanted to show in his much loved events, reining, barrels and poles, then he had to show in all the events that Julann believed would make him a well rounded rider and horseman. Hence Jay could be seen while he was growing up showing in the Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Western Riding, Halter, Trail and Showmanship, as well of course of the event that he really enjoyed – Reining.

While Jay knew from day one that he wanted to be a horse trainer, he also participated in sports while in Junior High and High School. Jay played on the football team while he was in Junior and Senior High School and played on the basketball team in Junior High School.

Jay started his own horse training business when he turned 18 and Jay McLaughlin Performance Horses came into being. Once Jay started his own business he became interested in the Reined Cow Horse events and started to become more and more involved in training for this event.

Jay is a 7 time NRCHA and AQHA World Champion, 8 time NRCHA and AQHA Reserve World Champion and has coached multiple Non Pro and Amateur World Champions. Jay McLaughlin has been training horses for over 20 years and became the head trainer for Aaron Ranch in September of 2013.
